Wat Traimit is one of the oldest temples in Chinatown area. The monastery which was founded by three wealthy Chinese merchants is the only Thai temple in the Chinese community that is dedicated to people who practice Buddhism.
The highlight here is the 5.5 ton pure gold Buddha image. The statue which may date back to 14th century was hidden beneath a stucco exterior when it was brought to Bangkok at the order of King Rama I who was trying to recover as many Buddha images as possible after the Burmese war. “The gold statue” was only discovered many years later when it fell from a crane and the stucco cracked open during a relocation in 1955.
The temple now holds the Guinness record for the largest solid gold statue in the World.
Some people come here to be amazed by the gold Buddha image while some make their way here to pray for a happy and auspicious life.
